Deep Loam Series: Reserve Wheels - Mountain Range | 15.05.23

‘The whole is greater than the sum of it’s parts’… an expression originally attributed to the philosopher Aristotle, but sums up the ethos of Reserve. They focus on creating the perfect and most optimum wheel solution for it’s intended purpose, not just a rim.

The Reserve Mountain Range

Reserve first launched with MTB wheels in 2017. At the time, carbon rims with a lifetime guarantee were unheard of. Within 12 months, Reserve leaped from unknown to one of the most highly-rated carbon wheel makers in the mountain bike market.

Whether you’re sending it down the steepest and roughest tracks on a downhill bike or exploring your local xc routes on the weekend, a Reserve wheel is engineered to simply be the best out there for your chosen discipline.

All the development work isn’t just equations and computer simulations. These wheels are tried and tested in the real world and raced at the highest level in every discipline, from the greatest athletes in downhill, such as Steve Peat, Greg Minnaar, Jackson Goldstone and Laurie Greenland to the Santa Cruz Rock Shox Pro XC Team comprising of Nadir Colledani, Sara Cortinovis, Martina Berta and Luca Braidot. Not forgetting the MTB legend that is Danny MacAskill, who helped test Reserve wheels to their limit by not being afraid to challenge preconceived notions of what’s possible on a mountain bike.

Reserve 30|HD Wheelset

The Reserve 30|HD rim is the rim that keeps Danny MacAskill rolling! Modern trail bikes are now extremely capable and designed to tackle anything that can be thrown at them. They are light enough to still be responsive when cruising mellow singletrack and more than strong enough to tame boulder-strewn descents. They deliver a do-everything performance that inspires the rider to go faster, more smoothly. The Reserve 30|HD is specially designed for trail riding and the abuse that longer travel trail bikes and harder hitting riders dish out. They feature a 30mm width for use with 2.5 tires and a redesigned inner rim bed that takes the hassle out of seating new tires. Designed to be used in longer travel trail bikes that will be pushed to the limit by harder hitting riders and racers. These wheelsets are usually fitted to Santa Cruz Models such as the Hightower, Megatower, Bronson, Nomad and 5010

Reserve 30|SL Wheelset

At just under 1750 grams, the Reserve 30|SL is one of the lightest trail-ready wheelsets on the market, with no rider weight limit. The Reserve 30|SL wheelset is an extremely versatile wheelset. The wheelset is light enough to be built into a Cross Country race rocket that will be pushed hard, providing a stiffer wheel with increased power transfer that has the capability to be fitted with a larger volume tyre. It can also be a great wheelset for your typical trail bike, if you are rider who’s focus is on performance when it comes to smashing those quick ‘power hours’ or banking rides of longer durations with plenty of elevation.

Designed to be used in shorter travel trail bikes that will be pushed to the limit by riders looking for a responsive, lighter and slightly more compliant ride feel, whilst not compromising on strength. These wheelsets are usually fitted to Santa Cruz Models such as the Tallboy, Blur TR and depending on build and riding preference even the Hightower.

The Reserve 31|DH Wheelset

Modern downhill tracks are not for the faint of heart and the abuse of a day racing a DH race or laps in the park can finish most DH orientated wheels, not the Reserve DH wheelsets. Tested to victory with the Santa Cruz Syndicate on the World Cup DH circuit, it is the carbon wheelset that delivers strength, stiffness and durability when you need it most.

Uncompromised strength gives the rider confidence to hit the hardest lines without any worries and the engineered compliance eliminates deflection, increasing traction and speed on those crucial race runs. These wheels and rims are designed to be used specifically in Downhill bikes that will be pushed to the limit in terms of riding and racing. With the DH specific hub spacing these wheelsets will be solely fitted to the Santa Cruz V10.

The Reserve 28|XC Wheelset

The Reserve 28|XC is the race-ready culmination of everything Reserve have learned from years of R&D and racing at the highest levels of competition. At 1387g for a complete DT Swiss 180 hub wheelset with tape and valves the 28|XC features a wider and lower rim profile than previous Reserve XC race wheels, increasing strength and lateral rigidity while adding vertical compliance. The new rim shape also eases tubeless tire installation and improves tire bead retention at lower pressures. The Reserve 28|XC is stiff and strong enough for a rowdy XC ride, but light and fast enough for a jaunt on the World Cup XC circuit.

Designed to be used with all out XC bikes by riders and racers alike looking for that competitive advantage in terms of rotational weight and stiffness. Perhaps not as strong as Reserve’s 30mm offerings, but given the limitations of tyre fitment, these rims naturally won’t be ridden as hard. Being only available in the super-fast rolling 29er format, hints at the focus of this wheelset. These wheels are designed to be ridden fast and are usually fitted to Santa Cruz Models such as the Highball and Blur.

Reserve E 30|HD 31|DH

Specifically designed for use on mixed-wheel E-bikes, Reserve’s 30|HD 31|DH E-MX wheelset offers the perfect balance of stiffness, performance, durability and weight. The lateral forces exerted on a wheelset fitted to an E-Bike are much greater than a conventional bike due to the weight and traction generated. Combining Reserve’s 30|HD front wheel with their World Championship-proven 31|DH rear wheel, provides all the stiffness possible to offset this. The super stiff construction of the 31|DH rear wheel allows for optimum power transfer from the electric motor, with still enough engineered compliance to make sure you’re not ‘fish-tailin’ on every climb and sprint.

The larger diameter of the 29 30|HD front gives the bike improved steering precision and more compliance for increased ‘feel’ through the bars and a reduction in deflection of the wheel from small high frequency bumps.
